She’s ready to give up on life, hiding her depression with sarcasm and booze. He’s got a secret and quit college, with few friends to lean on. When they discover each other, the sexual attraction is undeniable. So why does it seem impossible for them to be together?
Everyone wanted to be Jewels Peterson in high school. Naturally beautiful, exceptionally smart, talented cheerleader, life of the party, and with an All-American boyfriend to boot. One regrettable choice and fatal accident later, and Jewels found herself unceremoniously knocked off her pedestal. Now she’s in college, going through the motions, but not really living.
Adam Murphy is easy-going, charming, considerate, and crazy good looking; he’s exactly the kind of guy Jewels pictures herself being happy with. But Jewels is already involved with someone, and Adam makes it known that he’s guarding a dark secret, one that makes him the wrong guy for her. Trumped by the promise of an innocent friendship, Jewels is forced to ignore her overwhelming hunger for Adam.
After Jewels unknowingly helps Adam create a bucket list, they embark on the adventure of a lifetime that pushes their platonic relationship to its limits. But does she want to be with Adam without knowing the truth behind the skeletons in his closet, or is being with him just another pointless thing in her life?
This novel by Jennifer Ann is fascinating and stirring at the same time. For me, it is a heartwarming tale of love & survival. Jewels Peterson was battling depression after an unfortunate event happened to her boyfriend. She’s been taking meds to keep her sane and stay afloat in life. Then Adam Murphy came along one night while she was drinking booze and her bestfriend was nowhere to be found. A few conversations later, Adam asked her to take on a road trip with him after Jewels suggested a bucket list of sorts. Little did she knew that she was going to embark on a tumultuous journey of keeping up with his mission and at the same time, keeping her hands off of him.
Honestly, this book had made me think about life in general. I actually shed some tears after learning about Adam’s real condition & Jewel’s struggles with her depressed state. I thought Adam was absolutely dead set on the idea that he wouldn’t fall in love with Jewels because his number is already up. The only thing I wasn’t crazy about was Jewel’s attachment to a man who was only after sex and already got a kid of his own. Not really feeling her at that time. But the change in her perspective after spending a few days and nights with Adam has taken a toll on her when Adam decided to give up instead. It was wicked.
The whole story stirred a lot of emotional outbursts in me. That is how effective & talented author Jennifer Ann is! I’m hoping to read more of her captivating stories real soon.
Special thanks to Xpresso Book Tours for giving me an ARC of Jennifer Ann’s debut.
