The Passage by Justin Cronin

Title: The Passage

Series: The Passage #1

Author: Justin Cronin

Published August 2010
by Orion Books

Deep in the jungles of eastern Colombia, Professor Jonas Lear has finally found what he’s been searching for – and wishes to God he hadn’t.

In Memphis, Tennessee, a six-year-old girl called Amy is left at the convent of the Sisters of Mercy and wonders why her mother has abandoned her.

In a maximum security jail in Nevada a convicted murderer called Giles Babcock has the same strange nightmare, over and over again, while he waits for a lethal injection.

In a remote community in the California mountains, a young man called Peter waits for his beloved brother to return home – so he can kill him.

Bound together in ways they cannot comprehend, for each of them a door is about to open into a future they could not have imagined. And a journey is about to begin. An epic journey that will take them through a world transformed by man’s darkest dreams, to the very heart of what it means to be human.

And beyond.

Amy Harper Bellafonte is destined to become a hero. The Girl from Nowhere who will save the world. The one who will eradicate the virals. At first, I thought the virus is the catalyst to becoming a zombie, but as the story went, I learned that the virus actually turned human beings into bloodthirsty creatures, vampires. No, not the sparkly ones. But the vicious and cunning ones – imagine Gollum from LOTR, that’s how they’d look like.

This had been a thrilling read. Truth is, I learned about this book through Joseph Morgan (Klaus of The Vampire Diaries/The Originals) on his Twitter account. He highly recommended The Passage and so my curiosity was piqued. At that time, I thought his character Klaus Mikelson was the perfect vampire, and a man like Joseph Morgan who has a passion in reading is a man worth rooting for. After reading his review of The Passage, I immediately put this on my TBR list and read it as soon as I can.

I can now declare my love for The Passage. It is ridiculously awesome and horrific that I even thought I was reading Stephen King.

Hands down and thumbs up to Justin Cronin for a vampirically great novel. The Passage surpassed all my expectations in a paranormal book. This is the kind of story that would haunt me even in my dreams, but still would gladly read and relive all over again! Can’t wait to read The Twelve next!

Peter and the Starcatchers # 1

PeterStarCatcherTitle: Peter and the Starcatchers
Series: Peter and the Starcatchers #1
Authors: Dave Barry, Ridley Pearson
Illustrations by Greg Call

Don’t even think of starting this book unless you’re sitting in a comfortable chair and have lots of time. A fast-paced, impossible-to-put-down adventure awaits as the young orphan Peter and his mates are dispatched to an island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. They set sail aboard the Never Land, a ship carrying a precious and mysterious trunk in its cargo hold, and the journey quickly becomes fraught with excitement and danger.
Discover richly developed characters in the sweet but sophisticated Molly, the scary but familiar Black Stache, and the fearless Peter. Treacherous battles with pirates, foreboding thunderstorms at sea, and evocative writing immerses the reader in a story that slowly and finally reveals the secrets and mysteries of the beloved Peter Pan.

We’ve all heard, watched & read about Wendy, Tinkerbell, Hook, Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. But are we familiar with Peter Pan’s & the Neverland’s origin? Well, this book by Barry & Pearson is the closest & most perfect story to tell.

Eversince I was a child, Peter Pan has always been one of my favorite characters. If Cinderella was my favorite princess, Peter Pan was my hero. I think I’ve watched all the Peter Pan films there is. When I recognized David Barry’s name on this particular book in our local bookstore, I knew at once that this was about Peter Pan. I instantly grabbed this paperback and I thought my kids would like him. And boy, what a perfect & brilliant story this had been.

I loved Molly Aster and her admirable personality. She’s a major star in her own right, especially how she had helped Peter and his friends during their voyage. The story was believable in a magical way, that I actually thought this is Peter’s real beginnings! The mermaids, the treasures, the pirates, the starstuffs – they were all fascinating and delightful. I read this book to my kids and we didn’t care if the book was more than 400 pages long. My sons thought pirates are the coolest villains ever. They proclaimed Peter Pan as their newest favorite hero and after reading the book, they loved him even more! Can’t wait to read their next adventures!

Anxious hearts are tamed and souls are forever bound.

myrev

This is wickedly awesome! Zander and Daphne are two broken souls, with shattered hearts in a subdued relationship. After a whirlwind romance that got Daphne pregnant, Zander thought he finally broke through her walls and nabbed her heart. But Daphne still kept her heart guarded and couldn’t break the sexual tension brewing between them. It seemed like this relationship wouldn’t work even with a baby along the way. Will they ever find happiness in each other’s arms?

But because Felicia Tatum is a great author, this beautifully written story about two lost souls would definitely leave an imprint to the readers’ heart, mine included. I really loved the ending, it was so surreal and light-hearted. Plus the addition of Korah from another book series was really a treat! I am impressed with the character development and seamless plot that made Bound Souls more endearing to read. This is a highly recommended must-read to all who have loved and failed, to all who still continue loving, and to all who longs to find their one true love.

Book Review: Fractured Dream by KM Randall

Title: Fractured Dreamfractureddream
(The Dreamer Saga #1)
Author: K.M. Randall
Kindle edition; 430 pages
Published June 2014

BlurbHave you ever wondered where fairytales go once they’re created?

It’s been eight years since Story Sparks last had a dream. Now they’re back, tormenting her as nightmares she can’t remember upon waking. The black waters of Lake Sandeen, where her Uncle Peter disappeared decades before, may hold the secret to Story’s hidden memories, or a truth she’d rather not know. On a bright summer afternoon, Story and her two best friends, Elliot and Adam, take a hike to the lake, where they dive into the cool water and never reemerge. What they find is beyond anything they’ve ever imagined could be possible, a world where dangers lurk in the form of Big Bad Wolves, living Nightmares and meddlesome witches and gods.

Now Story must remember who she really is and somehow stop two worlds from ultimate annihilation, all while trying not to be too distracted by the inexplicable pull she feels toward a certain dark-eyed traveler who seems to have secrets of his own. The fates of the worlds are counting on her.

MyReview

Two minutes into reading the prologue, I thought the book is giving me the creeps. With my interest piqued, I continued reading about Story & I was soon blown away by the author’s wild & marvelous imagination. Fractured Dream, in my opinion, is the adventure of a lifetime & K.M. Randall is the Queen of all Fairytales!

Story, the Dreamer, the female protagonist, has a lot of stories to tell, literally. At first, when I saw the name, I told myself, Story is her name? Well, that’s a first! And when I finished the first chapter, I was sold! I didn’t stop until I finally learn about Story and her real story, why the lake stole lives, what really happened to her uncle, who was Jess and why did Story seem like she had a split personality? Those questions were eventually answered when she and her friends Elliot & Adam were taken to an “underwater wonderland” (Elliot’s words, not mine).

But as I devoured the pages, a lot more questions popped up on my mind. There were a lot of fairytale characters in the book, I admit I had a hard time keeping up, (with Bliss, Nicholas, Red, Big Bad Wolfe, Oafs, etc) but the novel was so enchanting that I was utterly entertained until the end. No dull moments, no dead air, no complaints at all! Ok wait, I wrote “until the end”, but the truth is there was no The End to the story because there are still a lot more adventures to come. Story still has got a lot of lives to meet and save. And we, the Storytellers, are in for more thrilling & fantastic surprises, the author made sure of that!

Review: MASKED ENCOUNTERS

Title: Masked Encounters Masked
Series: Intoxicating Passion Book 1
Author: Felicia Tatum
Kindle edition; 41 pages
Published January 2014

BlurbKorah Daniels has been through a lot in her nineteen years. Broken hearts, abusive relationships, and horrid dates have caused her to doubt love. When her friend talks her into attending the local frat house’s Halloween party, will she find the one person who can change her outlook on life?

Dane Davidson is the worst kind of playboy. The ultimate frat boy, drinking and ending up with a different girl every night. When his frat house throws a masked Halloween party, a certain angel catches his attention and may just turn his life upside down.

Masked Encounters is the first in a five part novelette series.

MyReviewMasked Encounters is an exciting and sexy short story by Felicia Tatum! She had impressed me before with her first book, The White Aura and now with her newest offering; I couldn’t help but agree with the other readers/reviewers. This novella is intriguing, captivating and really intimate. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

Korah’s character is as mysterious as Dane’s. In this book, we get to meet Korah who had built an entire wall around herself because she got hurt from a previous relationship. Despite this wall, her best-friend Leela still set her up with blind dates, which turned disastrous in the end. And one night, during a masked Halloween party, Korah let out her inhibitions, wore a sexy angelic dress and captured the eye of Dane. Unbeknownst to her, Dane had seen her before and had unnerved him with her uneasiness and aloofness to the guys. And when the barefoot Korah was tended by a gorgeous masked man, she retaliated and ended up doing the unthinkable. Yes, A barefoot angel with a masked stranger.. what happens next? Whatever it was, I’m not telling…

This book is really engaging. No boring scenes, no dull dialogues, just pure blissful reading! I liked how the story was told in alternate points of view. Korah clearly was struggling a lot, because of her abusive past, but she was trying to keep up. And Dane, yes, Dane the mysterious playboy. I wonder how long can he keep up with Korah in the next books… Well, you just got to wait for my next review of the next book!

All I Want For Christmas

Reyna didn’t think she needed anyone in her life. The Millers proved her wrong.

Now adopted, Reyna Miller has found that true family–the kind that will stand by you when things are tough, love you despite your shortcomings, and give you a safe place to call home–can be an invaluable thing.

But there are still some parts of her past that she’d rather forget. And there are still some wounds that haven’t quite healed, like when Neil, the boy she fell for five years ago disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again.

Now he’s back, and she doesn’t know how to handle it.

He’s in her home, with her family, celebrating Christmas with the rest of the Miller foster clan. What she thought she once wanted, she’s not so sure about now. And what she thought she knew may not be completely true.

Will Neil find a way to win Reyna back before the holidays are over? Or did the kindling of the love they once shared die long ago with one bad choice?

MyReview

I wasn’t in the mood for anything the last few days ago, so I needed a pick-me-upper. Luckily I spied my Kindle (which was lost in the midst of stuffed teddy bears and toys – Xmas gifts for the little ones) which I discovered, was placed there by my 3 year-old boy. (Kids!) When I turned it on, I immediately saw All I Want For Christmas on top of my TBRs so I read it, devoured it and cried with it in just a few hours. Now that made me smile after a few days, thanks Kate!

All I Want for Christmas is about Reyna, who was placed in the care of the kind-hearted Millers after Child Protection Services rescued her from her pill-popping, hallucinating mother. At first, she was adamant & refused to accept her new family, but as time progressed, she loved having a new one. Then she met her foster sibling, Neil. Theirs was a special kind of relationship – they bring out the best of each other when together. And also the worst. Which led to Neil doing something that tipped the police and him escaping to nowhere. Reyna felt betrayed, hurt, and her family, devastated. Trusting someone, or anyone for that matter, had always been one of Reyna’s issues so when Neil wounded her heart, she never wanted anything to do with him. Until they saw each other again. Until he saved him from a possible assault. Until he joined her foster family for Christmas. Until he kissed her again.

Soon, they would have to let go of their feelings, learn to forgive and forget, although the truth is, these emotions are easier said than done. Will Reyna and Neil ever get what they want for Christmas?

Kate Givans impressed me again with her Christmas offering. If there’s one thing I learned from this novella, it is that when one falls in love, trust should always come along. Although Trust is not something all loving relationships start with. But with Reyna and Neil, they learned to trust and love the hard way. They’re both scarred from their past, they’re both still reeling to face the future. Like what Neil had said, “We’re not that different. Different scars, different pasts, but trauma, pain, loss, hurt.. those things bind us together. We know what they are and we know what they feel like, and because of that, we’ll take special care of each other.” Big words from a troubled man. Big words from a man I am starting to admire. Big special words that struck my heart.

I like this one Kate shared on her book’s synopsis:

“There are some loves that grow like trees, starting small and then gaining strength, eventually blossoming into something large and majestic. Others start with a spark and catch fire almost immediately, burning bright like a comet. Neither one is right or wrong because all love requires work; it’s what you do in the long-term that matters.

P.S.

One more thing I liked in this novella, Prussia and Karisha Prescott are in this book! Awesome!
